Wikipediaguerillans aktion är lätt att följa på de artiklar de bevakar. Nu senast om James Randi där jag försökt korrigera med sakliga uppgifter som kan ses som negativa för Randi.
James Randi är en amerikansk trollkarl, debunker och tillhör nyateismens rörelse.[1]
Sedan 1970-talet har Randi näst intill maniskt jagat personer som verkar inom transpersonell forskning och som anser sig ha medial begåvning. Här har Uri Geller varit särskilt förföljd av Randi.
I Wikipedia-artikeln om Randi påstods att:
”Hittills har ingen lyckats uppvisa paranormala förmågor i samband med hans test.”
Detta är en falsk uppgift och när den har rättats till med korrekt uppgift har wikipediaguerillan tagit bort både påståendet och korrigeringen som är negativ för Randi.
Mest känd är han idag för ett pris på en miljon dollar, som han lovat att betala ut till den som på ett av båda parter acceptabelt sätt kan genomföra en studie som ”bevisar ett paranormalt, ockult eller övernaturligt fenomen”.
Randi avslöjad
Erbjudandet omfattar även 10.000 dollar till den som enligt Randis krav på bevisning kan visa upp något övernaturligt fenomen. Forskarna Russel Targ och Harold E. Puthoff vid Stanford Research Institute (ett ansett forskningsinstitut) utmanade Randi att vid SRI utföra Uri Gellers magi och under samma kontroll. Den utmaningen antog aldrig Randi.

Randi har också uppvisat en ojämn och irrationell hantering av andra som velat utmana honom men blivit nekade. Några av dessa avslöjanden finns i en studie av Michael Goodspeed. [2]
The Uri Geller Phenomenon
Ett av Randis argument mot Gellers förmåga är att han inte skulle kunna replikera en metod. Därför gjorde Geller just detta med en grupp barn. För att påvisa enkelheten fick barn lära sig tekniken att böja skedar och snart kunde en mängd barn genomföra samma ”övernaturliga” fenomen som Geller gjorde. Dessa barn blev kallade mini-geller. [3]
Kryptograf löste Randis utmaning
James Randi gömde ett testobjekt i ett särskilt utsett skåp i sitt Florida kontor, och utmanade klärvoajanter att använda fjärrsyn för att vinna miljon dollar priset. Kryptografen Matt Blaze och en kollega identifierade innehållet i Randis svarta låda från tusen miles, med enbart användande av deras sinnen (remote viewing). Blaze lade upp innehållet på sin hemsida, och i en fåordig e-post till 27B Stroke 6, medgav Randi att kryptografens slutsats var korrekt. Det är osäkert om Randi gjorde någon utbetalning. [4]
Skampris
Randi delar också ut sitt skampris Pigasus Award till personer som han anser har spridit pseudovetenskapliga rön till allmänheten. Jämför likheten med Vetenskap & Folkbildnings ”Förvillarpris”.
Randi har av pseudoskeptikerrörelsen fått en guru/helgonstämpel. Men han som vigt sitt liv åt att avslöja andra har aldrig lyckats med Geller däremot har han således själv avslöjats för bedräglig verksamhet.
Randi har dock den ställningen inom pseudoskeptikerrörelsen att Wikipediaguerillan (som är en del av denna rörelse) lägger upp även Randis titlar som är under produktion och ej publicerade (således utan källor). Något som är synnerligen märkligt för en encyklopedi.
Project Alpha
James Randi låg också bakom sabotaget av studier på extrasensorisk perception genom en utstuderad infiltration av bedragare kallat ”Project Alpha”.

James Randi is Taken for a Ride

Then it was Randi’s turn to be taken for a ride. Soon after his outing in January 1983 of Edwards and Shaw, the newsletter of a small Minneapolis research group, the Archaeus Project, announced that a fund of $217,000 had been set up for a metal-bending research programme under Archaeus director Dennis Stillings, to whom gifted subjects should apply.
The newsletter was a fake. No such fund existed. Stillings printed just two copies of his fake newsletter and sent them to Edwards and Shaw, confident that they would pass them on to Randi, as indeed they did.
Randi then started asking around as to what the source of this funding was, and was told it might be Medtronic, Inc., the Minneapolis-based company making pacemakers where Stillings worked as librarian.
Without bothering to check with the company, Randi assumed that it was the source, and on April 1, 1983, a Discover news release signed by Randi had this to say about the latest of his ‘Uri Awards’ for the ‘silliest and most irrational claims in relation to the paranormal’:
“To the Metronics [sic] Corporation of Minneapolis, who gave $250,000 [sic] to a Mr. Stillings of that city to fund the Archaeus Project, devoted to observing people who bend spoons at parties. Mr. Stillings then offered financial assistance to a prominent young spoon bender who turned out to be one of the masquerading magicians of Project Alpha – a confessed fake.”
Not only had Randi fallen hook, line and sinker for Stillings’s bait, but he had managed to make a total of four mistakes in his brief news release: the nonexistent fund had been increased from $217,000 to $250,000, the Medtronic Corporation had nothing to do with it, and was misspelled into the bargain, and Stillings had never ‘offered financial assistance’ to Shaw, Edwards, or anybody else.
Having shown that it is really quite easy to hoax somebody who does not check his facts very carefully, or indeed in this case not at all, Stillings promptly did it again. A couple of weeks after the Discover news release, Randi received a letter from ‘Reid Becker, Program Manager, Charon Investments’ telling him that ‘a rumour has come to my ears that Medtronic, Inc., has received a “Uri” award for contributing a large sum of money to psychic research’ and asking for further details as some of his clients held stock in the company.
Randi replied with the extraordinary allegation that the naming of Medtronic had not originated from him – but from Stillings. He suggested that Becker should contact him for clarification.

Sure enough, a bit of Internet research quickly revealed ISBN number 0-679-43886-6 to be the 1995 edition of the Random House Webster’s College Dictionary. Once we tracked down a library with a copy (it’s a bit scarcer than you might think), we checked page 275 (”/27 5”). If you’re following along with a copy at home, you’ll see that the 14th entry from the bottom (”-14″) is the definition for compact disc, which is, as Randi has confirmed, what was in the box.”
